Fort Knox is home to the Army Human Resources Center of Excellence as well as the United States Army Cadet Command and the United States Army Accessions Command. The U.S. Army Armor School is used by both Army and Marines to train soldiers on the M1 Abrams main battle tank. Fort Knox is located near Louisville, Kentucky. The United States Department of the Treasury has maintained the Bullion Depository at Fort Knox since 1937. Four elementary schools are provided by the Fort Knox Community Schools for grades PreK-3, Grades 4-6 attend two of the intermediate schools, and grades 7-8 attend middle school and those in high school attend the nearby high school. Special needs programs are available as well as half-day child care programs. Adult education opportunities are offered by the vo-tech school and community college in the surrounding communities. The Child Development Center is located in Buildings 4250 and 4249 and can be reached at 502-624-6700 for more information on specific programs including full time day care and part-time preschool.
Housing at Fort Knox is provided by Knox Hills LLC which operates the family housing on post. Applications can be sent in advance of arrival or by calling 502-799-6508. Military personnel are asked to check in at the Fort Knox Welcome Center which is located at 1383 Vine Grove Road which is near the Army One Stop Processing Center. The Housing Service Office can offer guidance whether personnel are looking for a home to buy or rent. Apartment complex information is also available. Call 502-624-3548 for help with individual BAH rates for off-post housing as well. Temporary lodging is offered by Fort Knox with over 600 rooms available in efficiency apartments. Reservations are accepted 120 days in advance by calling 502-943-1000. A recreational camping area known as Camp Carlson is also provided for those with recreational campers or trailers.
