Fort Knox Brief History

Known as the Home of Armor, Fort Knox has been a military installation of the United States
Army since 1918. During World War I, 10,000 acres were leased at the current fort to support
four artillery corps. The new cantonment was named Fort Henry Knox, in honor of General Henry Knox, Chief of Artillery and Revolutionary War and also Secretary of War.

In June 1918, 1.6 million was allocated to purchase 40,000 acres, and the camp began construction. From 1925 to 1928, it was designated Fort Henry Knox National Forest until that status ended with the arrival of infantry troops. The Army was then assigned the task of developing mechanization or tank warfare. One of the first cavalry captains to distinguish himself in tank warfare was George S. Patton.

In 1930, Congress authorized the creation of the Mechanized Force, and a tactical laboratory was created from nine combat and service arms. The arms force included armored cars, truck-drawn artillery, engineers, anti-aircraft artillery and infantry tanks. Camp Knox was designated as a permanent garrison on Jan. 1, 1932. The 1st Cavalry Regiment, which was the oldest mounted unit, arrived at Fort Knox and traded horses for combat cars.

In 1936, the U.S. Treasury Department began construction of the U.S. Bullion Depository. The Gold Vault opened in January 1937 when it received its first gold reserves.

In July of 1940, the Armed Force was created and the Headquarters of the I Armored Corps was established at Fort Knox. In October of 1940, the Armored Force Replacement Center was officially established at the Fort. Soldiers were trained in areas such as tank gunnery, armor tactics, communications and maintenance. Once World War II began, the initial troop of 155 officers grew to 700 and the 1,500 enlisted men became 3,500. Located at 1538 Eisenhower Avenue, a Landing Ship Tank was constructed which allowed Soldiers to train in how to load and unload armored vehicles for sea transport. The Patton Museum uses the building today to store historic armored vehicles.

During the war, the U.S. Bullion Depository was continuously used at Fort Knox to store gold and to safeguard such items as England's crown jewels and the Magna Carta. In December 1941, the Vault became home to the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the original Declaration of Independence. The documents remained at Fort Knox until October of 1944 when they were returned to Washington D.C. for public display.

Fort Knox, the Home of Mounted Warfare, has been home at one time to almost every armored force soldier in the Army. It has either been an initial entry point or a permanent garrison. Fort Knox entertains over 400,000 visitors a year at the Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor which displays war memorabilia including armor vehicles and cavalry artifacts.

As the Fort continues to upgrade its artillery range, new missions such as the U.S. Army Recruiting Center and the new Mounted Urban Training Complex continue to join Fort Knox's ranks and reaffirm the Fort as one of the leading Army installations in the country.
